Chiefs’ Beat Arrows With Controversial Goal

Kaizer Chiefs secured a vital, albeit contentious, 1-0 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows on Tuesday night as the Betway Premiership resumed at FNB Stadium, Johannesburg.

The match was decided by a singular, high-friction moment in the 39th minute that moved Amakhosi into third place, just two points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

The breakthrough came when 22-year-old defender Aden McCarthy turned the ball home from close range following a flicked header by Lebohang Maboe.

While the goal marked a significant personal milestone, McCarthy’s first-ever professional strike, it was immediately shrouded in controversy. Suspicion of offside was rampant; replays suggested McCarthy had strayed behind the last defender the moment the ball was flicked on.

Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi was left fuming, calling for the introduction of VAR. “If you want to see that this goal was an offside, just wait for the touch… already Aden McCarthy is on the other side,” Mngqithi told SuperSport TV, adding, “We lose the game; nobody cares.”

Meanwhile, Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze focused on the result, noting the win “gives us the freedom and more confidence to keep playing” as they prepare to play ZESCO United in a high-stakes CAF Confederation Cup group stage match in Zambia.
